Pleasure ground - Discover Shawground and Fairground at The Shaw. The perfect way to experience theatre outdoors at The Shaw. You’ve seen him on the Shaw stages for over seven seasons. His selected credits include A Christmas Carol, 1979, Arcadia, Helen’s Necklace and much more. But this year Sanjay Talwar is going behind the scenes. In an unusual year for theatre, ideas were needed on how to imagine theatre in different venues and as a result he has curated The Shaw’s outdoor spectaculars Fairground and Shawground. Both are fantastically fun and unique ways to experience theatre in beautiful natural settings. Sanjay answered some questions about how this all came about. WATCH NOW Experience theatre differently with Look Up by Damien Atkins - Featuring: Jason Cadieux, Julie Lumsden, Chick Reid, Travis Seetoo
Creative Producer/Director: Brenley Charkow Look Up is an immersive audio experience that we want to share with all theatre-lovers. Written by Shaw Ensemble member Damien Atkins, Look Up brings together the natural world, technology and the spoken word. "It has been scientifically documented by now that trees communicate with each other. And it is suspected that they communicate with us as well. Look Up is a meditation, a fantasy, an imagining of what we might hear from them, if we could only still ourselves long enough to listen."

Find one of our recommended listening locations in our beautiful gardens at the Festival Theatre. Please use your mobile phone to access the link and listen using your ear buds. Alternatively, if you want to go to the spot that inspired Damien, visit Queen’s Royal Park, across from 16 Front Street (where the gazebo is located, overlooking Lake Ontario). If travel to the location is not possible, we encourage you to listen to the audio file, surround yourself within a group of trees … and press play. LISTEN NOW From the Vault - Shaw Festival acquires the Royal George Theatre in 1980 - The Festival had only a matter of weeks to get ready for its first show in the Royal George, a selection of music and lyrics by Irving Berlin under the title of Puttin’ on the Ritz. There was no time (or money) for major renovations, so seating was limited to the main floor, where about 240 patrons were squeezed in. In the absence of an orchestra pit, music was provided by a single piano, increased to two, one on each side of the stage, for The Desert Song in 1982 and subsequent musicals. Renovations had to wait, but they occurred at regular intervals during the 1980s, as funds were raised. Excerpt from Shaw Festival - The First Fifty Years by L.W. Conolly
